We are delighted to announce the completion of our Astro-Turf pitch extension. Security fencing has been completed, ball-stop netting is hanging, synthetic grass has been laid and brushed, and our new 2400msq playing pitch is fully lined and ready for use. Pupils at Kilkishen N.S. will commence using the facility form Thursday March 14 once all builders safety fencing has been removed. Bookings from local sports clubs are made through Kilkishen Development CLG. Three sets of 5 a-side soccer goals and retractable G.A.A. goals are due to arrive next week. We look forward to enjoying the facility and thank everyone for their support in making the project a reality. On Tuesday March 12, pupils from 6th class travelled to Knock Co. Mayo as part of their preparations for the sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday April 20. Pupils from three schools within the parish cluster of Tulla/Broadford and Kilkishen/O'Callaghans Mills took part in the trip supported by Fr. Brendan Quinlivan, Fr. Donal Dwyer and cathecist Bernie Torpey. Pupils attended mass at the Apparition Chapel celebrated by both Fr. Brendan and Fr. Donal, visited the spot where the Apparition was witnessed in 1879, and enjoyed a guided tour and learned about the history of this special place of pilgrimage. Pupils finished the trip with a visit to the upgraded Basilica, which is home to the Apparition Mosiac comprising of an astonishing 1.5million individual pieces. Highlights of the trip are shared below. Kilkishen senior girls competed in the Clare primary 5-a-side soccer blitz held at Tulla United on Monday March 11. Kilkishen Green and Yellow teams played some great matches with star performers on both teams. Our Green team were narrowly defeated by overall winners Feakle N.S. in extra time of the play-off decider. Well done to all our girls that took part and represented Kilkishen N.S. so well. Junior and Senior Infants celebrated World Book Day yesterday by dressing up as their favourite characters from books. They discussed why they liked their character and drew a picture of them on their character profile sheet. They also visited 5th and 6th class pupils for some shared reading of their favourite books. A great day was had by all!
The children in Senior Infants and 1st class enjoyed celebrating World Book Day 2024. They shared a selection of their favourite books, and they explained what they liked about the characters in these books.
Eight teams and 52 pupils will take part in the Kilkishen N.S. Senior Soccer League. A draw took place on Thursday March 7 to select our 8 teams and group fixtures. There will be two groups of 4 teams which will be run in a round robin format with each team playing each other in 20 minute games. The finals day will see teams qualify based on their position in each group table. Each win will earn 3 points, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. Each match will have 1 bonus point on offer for the team using the most Irish during the game. Top teams in both groups will play in the cup final. Second in each group will play in the cup runner-up match. Third in each group will play-off for the shield final and fourth place in both groups will play-off for the shield runner-up prize. Looking forward to starting the league once our Astro-Turf reopens. Best of luck to all taking part. The children in 4th and 5th Class really enjoyed getting into character for World Book Day. They all looked fantastic and we did lots of fun activities such as Character Description worksheets, World Book Day Bingo, a World Book Day Quiz and of course we did the Bog Walk to show off all their creative costumes. Congratulations to Erin Kennedy for achieving a reading millionaire award using the online reading programme Accelerated Reader. Erin is the second reading millionaire to receive this award in 2024. Congratulations Erin from everyone at Kilkishen N.S.
Congratulations to our Pupil of the Week award winners. Each week pupils are asked to remember 3 important rules: 1. Show Respect 2. Do Your Best and 3. Complete Homework. In each classroom pupils that manage to demonstrate these on a daily basis are in the running for special weekly awards announced every Monday. Well done to all our award winners from Ms. Fawl, Ms. Whitney, Mr. Keane and Mr. Walsh's classes. Best of luck to everyone this week. For the first time ever in Kilkishen N.S. history, our boys basketball team qualified for the Round 2 stages of the Marion Keane memorial primary school basketball tournament held at Gurteen G.A.A. hall on Monday March 4. Kilkishen were grouped with Ballyea N.S., Holy Family N.S. Ennis and Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Cíosóg Inis. Kilkishen boys played 3 very keenly contested games against all three schools with Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Inis emerging as overall winners. Congratulations to all our 6th class boys on their magnificent achievement on making it to the knockout stages. 5th and 6th class have been enjoying the online Mathletics program. Some students have earned bronze certificates. Pupils can log in at school or at home to earn 1000 points per week and a certificate. We are delighted to say that our Astro-Turf extension has entered the final stages of construction. Today, members of the Premier Pitches installation team were laying shock pad and synthetic grass on top of the foundation layers of stone and groundworks. After some delays, we are very hopeful that our facility will be open for use by mid-March. We look forward to enjoying the finished pitch and sharing the facility with our pupils and local sporting clubs very soon. The children in 4th and 5th Class did fantastic printing in the Art lesson last week. Following on from our history lesson where we were learning about the Aztecs, the children made prints based on Aztec art. They researched some Aztec patterns and symbols and then drew their design on a piece of strong cardboard. The next step was to glue string on to the outline of their design. This was then dipped in black paint and used to make their prints on white paper. We were delighted with the results. Well done everybody. For all the latest news and updates from Kilkishen N.S., please read the March edition of our school newsletter. Last week 4th and 5th Class enjoyed the following fun 'Decimals' math stations.

Best of luck to everyone this week. 4th and 5th Class have been learning about conductors and insulators in Science this week. As an extension to this lesson, we investigated the different ways animals keep warm in the winter or in cold climates. To demonstrate how a polar bear keeps warm, we carried out this simple experiment. Polar bears have thicker skin than us. In this experiment we used the first plastic glove to show this. This simple layer is much more effective in keeping the cold out than our skin. Secondly, polar bear fur is covered in oils which make it almost waterproof, similar to our plastic glove. Lastly, their fur is hollow and traps lots of air. Air is an excellent insulator against the cold. The air between the first and second glove shows us this in our experiment. 4th and 5th Class not only enjoyed using the WeDo Lego kits themselves but they also assisted the Senior Infants in building some amazing creations too. More pictures can be seen on our class page. What a great way to enhance students' curiosity and engineering skills while having fun! Congratulations to Hudson Donovan for achieving a reading millionaire award using the online reading programme Accelerated Reader. Hudson is also our school Spelling Bee champion and is looking forward to the County Spelling Bee which takes place in April. Congratulations and best of luck Hudson from everyone at Kilkishen N.S. |
