4th and 5th Class students were learning how to write a formal letter in class. Therefore, we decided to write and send letters to friends, family or an inspirational person of our choice. We are hoping to get some responses when we return to school after the midterm break. We celebrated the Active School Flag initiative 'Active Halloween' by going on a spooky Bog Walk. We hope we didn't scare too many villagers!! Happy Halloween!! The children in 4th and 5th Class were learning about the layers of the Earth and the movement of tectonic plates in Earth's crust. To represent the layers of the Earth, we made a simple but highly effective model from playdough. We hope you like it just as much as we do.
The Infants had a fun Friday doing the bog walk, admiring other classes costumes and tasting the Irish traditional Halloween 'bairín breac'! The yummy 'cinema' treats compliments of the PA sure went down a treat with our Halloween Movie 'The Addams Family' this afternoon! The students of 2nd and 3rd class really enjoyed their Halloween bog walk. The children dressed up and scared the life out of Mr. Walsh (which they enjoyed immensely) Happy Halloween from everyone in 2nd and 3rd class.
Junior and Senior Infants explored and embraced the Aistear Theme 'The Building Site' this month! The boys and girls of 2nd and 3rd class have been learning about life on the farm. Through webinars hosted by Agri Aware the children have learned about dairy, sheep and cereal farming. They have loved the interactive medium of learning about farm life.
Take a peek at Juniors and Senior Infants' Halloween and autumn art! The class made bat prints, pumpkin prints and painted autumn trees. The children in 4th and 5th Class are preparing for Halloween! They made these spooky Pumpkin Masks and they really enjoyed giving the other classes a big fright! Congratulations to our Student of the Week award winners in Ms. McNamara's, Mr. Walsh's and Ms. Fawl's classrooms. Pupils are selected for Trying Their Best, Showing Respect and Completing Their School and Homework. Each student receives a Student of the Week certificate and has their photograph published on the school website. Well done to all and best of luck everyone to be chosen as next week's winners. The students of 2nd and 3rd class made a creative and spooky display for Halloween. With the help of our visiting TY students and Caroline the students overcame the complex design. The children are well and truly in the spirit for Halloween.
The pupils in 5th and 6th class were presented with the challenge of creating squares, cubes, triangles and pyramids using cocktail sticks and blu-tack. This enabled them to actively explore which of these shapes were the strongest. The children were then challenged to create the tallest freestanding structure or the strongest structure. They learned the importance of triangles in building major structures all over the world. This experience came in useful last week when they were given the challenge of working together to create their own catapults using only lollipop sticks, sellotape and elastic bands. They enjoyed experimenting and trying to modify their designs. Congratulations to our Student of the Week award winners in Ms. McNamara's, Mr. Walsh's and Ms. Fawl's classrooms. This week 4th and 5th Class were given the challenge to prepare and demonstrate an experiment using household items. The children really impressed me with the simple yet effective experiments they chose. As a result of their hard work and excellent explanations we explored various scientific concepts in a fun and interactive way. Well done everyone! First and second class had great fun celebrating World Animal Day on Monday the 4th of October. They worked in groups researching information on different animals to create fantastic projects. Have a look at their great work below. The boys and girls of 2nd and 3rd class have enjoyed Gaelic Football lessons the past few weeks. They have learned how to solo and hand pass the ball. The children love to participate in drills and also matches.
Lately, three of the children in 4th and 5th Class brought in some very interesting items to share with the class. Aoibheann brought in a nest she found in her back garden. Úna brought in her collection of rocks which she tumbled herself. Tracy brought in her interactive globe. As we were recently learning about the use of papyrus in Ancient Egypt, I also brought in a real papyrus scroll which I bought in Egypt to show to the class. We love learning from each other. The children in 5th and 6th class responded enthusiastically to the challenge of working together to construct their own paper rockets. They explored how moving air can make things move. They learned that powerful rockets enable spacecrafts to break away from the earths gravity. These rockets burn fuel and as there is no air/oxygen in space these rockets carry their own oxygen with them. Using a sheet of A4 paper, a pencil, scissors and a paper straw the children built their own rocket. After a few practice runs and adjustments each group had a go at testing how far their rocket would travel. The furthest distance recorded was an impressive 4.9 metres. Definitely some future scientists and engineers in this group. The children of 2nd and 3rd class had great fun engineering structures from marshmallows and spaghetti. They worked in groups to design and construct their structures. There was a lot of problem solving and unexpected collapses to content with, however their engineering endeavour shone through with the construction of some magnificent structures.
