For the latest news and updates, please read the May edition of our school newsletter. The pupils of 4th to 6th class took part in Cycle Safety training provided by An Garda Síochana and organized by our school's Parents Association Committee. Garda Liam O'Reilly gave a safety talk on Monday to the pupils highlighting the importance of road safety when cycling on public roads. On Tuesday Garda Rob O'Grady led a practical safety session instructing pupils how to safely approach junctions, navigate roundabouts and how to safely use traffic lights. The pupils were assessed on what they had learned by Garda Rob and Liam and passed with flying colours. Pupils will put their learning to good use cycling to school when appropriate and later this term when they will cycle to the 12 o'clock Hills. The Green Schools Committee decided to plant sunflowers to encourage biodiversity in our school. There was also another very special reason that we chose sunflowers. The sunflower is the national flower of the Ukraine and it is now seen as a symbol of peace. We hope and pray for peace in the Ukraine. The children in 4th and 5th Class are really enjoying their lessons with Miss Donnellan. Take a look at all the fantastic things they have been learning.
A fantastic conclusion to our school soccer league was witnessed on Friday April 8. Four great finals with superb skill and commitment evident in all games. Our School League Cup champions are Argentina, led by captain Jamie Moroney, sealed victory with a terrific performance in the final defeating Spain. Germany were crowned Shield champions with a dominant performance defeating France, while Italy were crown third place winners and Portugal winning fourth spot beating Ireland on penalties. Well done to all that took part. A special mention to our two individual award winners, our Player of the Tournament Ruiarí Frist and Player of the Match in the Cup final Colin Greaves. Congratulations! On Friday the FAI School Soccer League finals day take place. After three weeks of group games the finals pairings have been decided. We look forward to a great day of participation and fun. Best of luck to all teams. Sadly, our bees are in trouble. Three bee species have become extinct in Ireland within the last 80 years. One-third of our remaining bee species are currently at risk of extinction. Supervalu have joined forces with the National Biodiversity Data Centre and the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan to help Save the Bees.
All of us here in Kilkishen N.S. want to get involved and help Supervalu in their mission to Save the Bees. The Green Schools Committee will be planting the Bees Pollinator Pack sent out to schools so that we can create our own bee-friendly garden. We will be learning more about bees and biodiversity in our classrooms using the guidebooks, posters and bookmarks we received as well. We need your help! To enter the competition we are asking you to collect a Save the Bees card when you spend €30 or more in your local SuperValu. This will give us a chance to WIN A SHARE OF €50,000!! You can get an extra Save the Bees card when you scan your Real Rewards card. Please pass this message on to all your relatives and neighbours who shop in Supervalu so we can fill up our Wall Chart before the 12th of May 2022. Boys from 5th and 6th class took part in the annual Marion Keane memorial basketball tournamnet on Monday April 4. Kilkishen were pooled with Bridgetown, Kilmurry and Tulla N.S. The boys performed exceptionally well winning two of their three games with great performers on the day. Well done to all the boys that took part and represented their school so well. The children in 4th and 5th Class recently designed beautiful projects about their homes. They included information about the history of their homes such as when they were built and they also detailed what their homes are currently like. I was very impressed with all the children's projects and with their confident presenting skills. |
